Clinical context

For adults with pH, PaCO₂, and analyzer-reported calculated HCO₃⁻ from one arterial blood-gas sample. It reports the pH state, acid-base process pattern, and expected physiologic response.

What it shows

The pH state describes acidemia, the reference range, or alkalemia; acid-base processes are acidosis or alkalosis. The headline keeps the state and process distinct and names mixed processes when the values support them.

How it works

The entered values are checked with the Henderson–Hasselbalch relationship before interpretation. HCO₃⁻ reflects the metabolic component, while PaCO₂ reflects the respiratory component. Expected-response equations can identify a possible second process; a single arterial blood-gas analysis cannot establish duration.

Use and limits

Use the result as a pattern check alongside the patient, local reference intervals, sample handling, and recent ventilation changes. Do not substitute standard bicarbonate for analyzer-reported calculated HCO₃⁻. It does not establish cause or assess oxygenation. It does not recommend treatment and is not validated here for pediatric, neonatal, pregnancy-specific, venous, or capillary samples.
