Clinical context

This calculator returns a user-selected intravenous ketamine induction dose. Current labeling supports 1–4.5 mg/kg for IV induction, administered slowly; dose requirements vary with patient condition and concomitant anesthetics. For intramuscular induction, analgesic infusions, or critical-care uses outside the label, follow the relevant current protocol. Ketamine must be administered by clinicians prepared to maintain the airway and provide ventilation. Rapid IV administration or excessive dosing can cause respiratory depression or apnea. Blood pressure and heart rate commonly increase, but cardiovascular depression can occur in catecholamine-depleted or critically ill patients. Emergence reactions, hypersalivation, vomiting, and increased muscle tone may occur. Monitor ventilation, oxygenation, circulation, and recovery continuously. Ketamine does not reliably suppress pharyngeal and laryngeal reflexes and is not a substitute for airway protection when aspiration risk is present.
