Clinical context

This calculator returns a user-selected intravenous sufentanil dose for anesthesia. Label regimens differ substantially between use as an analgesic adjunct and use as a primary anesthetic. Choose the intended regimen before entering the dose. This IV calculator is not intended for neuraxial administration. Sufentanil is a potent opioid that can cause life-threatening respiratory depression, apnea, skeletal-muscle or chest-wall rigidity, bradycardia, and hypotension. CYP3A4 inhibitors and other CNS depressants can markedly increase toxicity. Dose selection must account for age, physical status, other anesthetics, the procedure, and planned postoperative ventilation. Use only by clinicians trained in potent IV opioids, with continuous respiratory and cardiovascular monitoring and immediate access to oxygen, airway and ventilation equipment, resuscitation drugs, and an opioid antagonist.
