Clinical context

Propofol is an intravenous hypnotic used for induction and maintenance of general anesthesia and for selected forms of sedation. It provides no analgesia. Administration requires personnel trained in general anesthesia or procedural sedation who are not simultaneously performing the procedure, with continuous oxygenation, ventilation, and cardiovascular monitoring. Hypotension, bradycardia, apnea, and airway obstruction are common dose-related hazards. Reduce and slow dosing in older, debilitated, hypovolemic, or hemodynamically unstable patients. Strict aseptic handling is required. Pediatric ICU sedation is not an approved use in current labeling. Prolonged high-dose infusion increases the risk of propofol infusion syndrome; monitor metabolic, cardiac, renal, and lipid abnormalities when clinically relevant. The TIVA dose ranges shown are estimates in mg/kg/hour and do not define anesthetic depth. Titrate anesthesia to the patient, surgical stimulus, co-administered drugs, and appropriate clinical monitoring.
